I went during low season and arrived around noon. Hoping to do 1.5 days of Taroko, I was disappointed when advised that I should just go around the city and go on a tour the next day to Taroko, versus doing it independently for 1.5 days. Not much information about the town or events was given to me, I relied heavily on the posters around the hostel and my guidebook.

This hostel has a good location about halfway between the train station and downtown. Cool atmosphere, with wood floors and some plants. The staff is friendly - one of the guys let my wife use his laptop to check a buggy CF card for her camera. My one complaint is that they don't have much information here. I had to walk back to the visitors center near the train station to get info about Taroko Gorge trails and the bus schedule.

As long as you're not expecting a slick and busy hostel, this is a well situated place to stay with plenty of character. Difficult to find on the street - look for a small sign by the ground floor entry door.

The staff are friendly and the price is not bad. But to really enjoy this place you would have to love the smell of wet dogs. I don't.

Close to lots of restaurants and shops, on a busy road, but quiet at night, a longish walk from the train station, but a quick taxi ride away. Bar is a good place to socialise. Place is clean and people there (staff and tourists) are friendly. Most beds have ordinary mattresses, but a few seem to just have blankets instead, so a bit hard.Tours easy to organise. People's ability to judge time in this town a little on the dodgy side - if they tell you it takes 40 mins to get somewhere, it's

The door seemed to be open all day and no-one was at the desk. When I arrived, the hostel was completely empty.
Apart from that, it's a really pleasant place to stay.
